War…How much pain, sorrow and horror this word carries. How many lives were taken by the Great Patriotic War. Many families were left without a single breadwinner: a father, son, brother or husband.

More than 27 million of our compatriots died in the Great Patriotic War. At the cost of their lives, they fought to the last drop of blood, to the last breath. Thousands of monuments bear witness to the exploits of the older generation: among them were children, women, and the besiegers of Leningrad.

In the first days of the war, hundreds of students of the institute went to the front, more than 150 teachers performed their duty in medical and sanitary battalions, hospitals, and ambulance trains. Many employees and students were directly involved in the battles on the fronts.

In 1941, two graduates of doctors took place in frontline Voronezh: in June, 435 people, in October, 536 people. The class of 1942 followed a shortened medical training curriculum. It lasted only three and a half years. Associate Professor of the Department of Normal Anatomy, N. A. Kurdyumov, in 1943, in his letter mentioned: "At this terrible moment, doctors-students of the Voronezh Medical Institute with a lancet and a military weapon in their hands courageously defend the honor and independence of our Motherland from the hated enemies-the destroyers of culture».

During the war, the Voronezh State Institute had to be evacuated twice. For the first time in the autumn of 1941, he went to the city of Krasnoyarsk in an organized manner, with all the valuable equipment and personnel. In January 1942, due to the improvement of the situation at the front, the institute returned to Voronezh, and students began to study. However, the spring exams were held already in the conditions of the beginning of the bombing of the city. On July 3, 1942, the 4th year students graduated in the number of 464 people. And the next day, July 4, 1942, the Voronezh State Medical Institute was evacuated for the second time, now to the city of Ulyanovsk. In 1943, after the liberation of the right bank of Voronezh from the Nazi invaders, a branch of the medical institute was organized in the city. It is located in the partially preserved building of the sanitary building of the Institute. In August 1944, the Voronezh Medical Institute returned from Ulyanovsk to the destroyed Voronezh. The restoration of educational buildings and clinics began, in which students and teachers actively participated.

It is important to emphasize that during the war, the teachers of the medical institute were the main consultants of military hospitals. Professor Nikolai Nikitich Nazarov (Fig.1) - in the first days of the war, together with the staff of the Department of Faculty Surgery, he was mobilized and sent to the active army. Professor Mikhail Fyodorovich Ryabov (Fig.2) in 1941, he headed the committee for the development of the production of medicinal products in Voronezh. In 1942, Ryabov volunteered for the front, was a therapist on a number of fronts. Professor Nikolai Ivanovich Leporsky (Fig.3) constantly consulted the wounded and sick soldiers in the hospitals of Voronezh and Ulyanovsk, in the medical sanitary units of the defense industry factories.

Some students of the Voronezh State Medical Institute were awarded the highest ranks - generals of the medical service.

These include Nechetov Andrey Pavlovich (Fig. 4)-head of the central military medical commission of the Ministry of Defense of the USSR. German Petrovich Stolyarov (Fig. 5) - honored surgeon, in the post-war years he served as the first Deputy head of the Main Department of the Ministry of Defense of the USSR. A. S. Those terrible events are getting further and further away from us. Long ago, the trenches were overgrown with grass, cities were rebuilt, new generations grew up, but the human gratitude that is stored in every family, in every heart, will never disappear. These hearts beat thanks to all the heroes of the great days of the war, and among these heroes are written in large letters the names of doctors, teachers and students of medical institutes, in whose hands was the most important weapon - the gift of saving human life, sometimes giving their own. "What was done by Soviet medicine during the last war, in all fairness can be called a feat" - Marshal of the Soviet Union Baghramyan I. V.
